About the Logo

Designer Chris Irvine was approached to consider a logo design for the LSS in the spring of 2006. Shortly after that he began an inspiring trip to museums and art galleries across Europe and returned to Canada deeply influenced by the ways he had seen classic images depicted in modern graphic ways.

Chris chose to utilize a gryphon both to compliment Dalhousie University’s branding and to call on the great history of the legal vocation. He felt a longevity existed in this imagery that is lost in logos which rely on a current or trendy visual effects to carry them. The gryphon Chris created is positioned somewhere between the earlier more terrifying gargoyle types and the later more regal ones.

Ever on guard, poised to strike in the defense of others and fire breathing, leaving no doubt the tongue is mightier than the sword, this gryphon is truly the embodiment of advocacy. Chris attributes the impact of the logo to the fact that it feels like it may have always existed and yet has a bold modern feel at the same time.
